Title : Determinants of agro processing participation and their influence on smallholder farmers’ resilience in Limpopo Province, South Africa
Abstract:
Determinants of agro-processing participation are crucial for understanding how smallholder crop farmers build resilience in vulnerable rural economies. Despite the potential benefits, participation among smallholder crop farmers remains uneven. This study investigates the determinants influencing agro-processing participation and examines their influence on smallholder crop farmers’ resilience in Limpopo Province. Primary cross-sectional data were collected through a multi-stage sampling approach, with structured questionnaires administered to 130 smallholder crop farmers (65 participants and 65 non-participants). Kendall’s coefficient of concordance was employed to rank the constraints faced by the farmers, while a binary logistic regression model was used to analyze determinants of agro-processing participation. The results revealed a strong agreement among agro-processing participants (W = 0.786) and a statistically moderate agreement among non-participants (W = 0.663), indicating consistent perceptions of key constraints. The most severe constraints identified amongst both participants and non-participants of agro-processing include unfavourable weather conditions, inadequate storage, poor transportation, and high labour costs. The binary regression results revealed that financial support (p < 0.05), farm income (p = 0.01), post-harvest losses (p < 0.01), farming experience (p < 0.05), farm size (p < 0.10), and sources of income (p < 0.10) significantly influenced agro-processing participation with different coefficient parameter signs. These findings demonstrate that agro-processing participation contributes to income stability and adaptive capacity, thereby enhancing smallholder crop farmers' resilience to various shocks. The study provides empirical evidence to guide policy interventions aimed at promoting inclusive agro-processing and fostering sustainable rural development.
